THE BLACK ACADEMY OF ARTS AND LETTERS EVA JESSYE GIFT SHOP is named after the famed American conductor who was the first black woman to receive international distinction as a professional choral conductor. Her choir sang at the original 1963 March on Washington, and she served as the musical director with George Gershwin’s opera, “Porgy and Bess” in 1935. Dr. Jessye composed, conducted, supported, and appeared at TBAAL frequently, prior to her death.
